Itheon Performance Monitor (iPM) Getting Started

First Monitoring Setup

With iPM installed and initially configured, this article walks through monitoring your first device, which is the fastest way to confirm everything is working.

Option A: Use the Wizard (recommended for your first device)

  1. From the dashboard, open the Wizard.
  2. Choose the device type you are adding (for example, a generic network device, a Linux server, or a Windows server).
  3. Enter the device's IP Address.
  4. Leave Ping enabled, since this gives you a basic up/down check immediately, even before any other service is configured.
  5. If the device supports SNMP, enter the SNMP Version (v1, v2c, or v3), the SNMP Port (161 by default), and the Community string (for v1/v2c) or your SNMPv3 credentials.
  6. Run the check. The Wizard will attempt to reach the device and, where SNMP is available, offer to add relevant services automatically (interface status, CPU, memory, and so on, depending on what the device exposes).
  7. Confirm and save. The new host now appears on your dashboard.

Option B: Use Auto Discovery (for onboarding multiple devices at once)

If you have a whole subnet or IP range to add, use Auto Discovery instead of adding hosts one at a time:

  1. Open Auto Discovery from the Configuration menu.
  2. Enter the IP range or subnet to scan, and the SNMP credentials to try against discovered devices.
  3. Run the discovery scan. iPM will ping and probe the range, identify responsive devices, and show you what it found.
  4. Review the results and select which discovered devices to add as monitored hosts.

Confirming it worked

Go back to the dashboard. Within a few minutes (depending on the check interval), your new host should show a status of Up, with a green indicator. If it shows Down or Pending:

  • Confirm the device responds to ping from the iPM server itself, since a network or firewall issue is the most common cause
  • Double-check the SNMP version, port, and community string or credentials if you added SNMP-based services
  • See Device Not Reachable and SNMP Problems in the Troubleshooting section if the issue persists

Once you have one host monitoring successfully, repeat the process (or use Auto Discovery) to bring the rest of your infrastructure under iPM.
